Soprano neozelandesa (de ascendencia maorí). En 1966, después de ganar diferentes concursos de canto en su país, se marchó a Londres para profundizar sus estudios y debutó en 1970 en el Covent Garden. Pronto obtuvo papeles principales y llegó a ser admirada especialmente como la condesa en
Las bodas de Fígaro. En 1974 hizo su debut triunfal en el Metropolitan Opera, al asumir en último momento el papel de Desdémona en
Otello de
Giuseppe Verdi. Dotada de una rica voz, sumada a una presencia encantadora y magnífica serenidad, en 1981 fue escogida para cantar en las bodas del príncipe Carlos. Ha realizado múltiples grabaciones.
